[Solved] Game Lagging Horribly after 9/21 Graphic Driver Update
« on: September 25, 2016, 04:50:31 PM »
I really should have followed the old saying, "if something's not broken, don't fix it", because just last month I bought this computer to play the sims 3 and only that, and back then the GeForce GT 730 driver that came pre-installed was working perfectly with my game. No lags, settings were medium (in the Sims 3 game), and the game flowed smoothly with no lags or stuttering whatsoever.

Now, on the 21st, I saw an update 372.90 was available for drivers, and so I thought, why not? And installed it... As soon as I did, when I restarted my game, I immediately noticed that my graphics settings and overall game setting changed back to default, (for ex, I had aging off, and after the update aging was back on), every so often, there would be tiny little lags in my sims' movements. I didn't like what the new driver was doing, so I went to device manager and display adapters (it showed Geforce GT 730), and rolled backed to the previous driver I had, which came with the desktop I bought last month.

That seemed to have fixed the issue, and I was glad. But then, the small stuttering returned, and I tried to adjust the game settings from medium to low, though it didn't do much. Next, I tried to check if the game was even detecting my graphics card, and had to make some changes so that it said [found: 1, matched: 1) like in this thread: http://www.carls-sims-4-guide.com/forum/index.php?topic=26753.msg446248#msg446248.

It still didn't work, and somehow the stuttering has turned into lagging, as every few seconds, there would be a lag. It's not just the sims' themselves now, but the whole game. I then read that apparently there were other components like the nvidia 3d hd controller driver and the hd audio driver that I didn't necessarily have to install along with the update, so I uninstalled those and restarted. I then tried to install a later but not current version of the driver again, one that I read didn't have any stuttering issues, which was 368.81. Still no luck and the game is still lagging so bad.

I'm so depressed over this and I would really appreciate some help to fix this issue to get my game running back to the smooth way it ran before. I was so pleased with how smoothly everything ran and now I'm just blaming myself and wishing that I never touched that update then none of this would've happened.

I'm just not sure what to do. Everything was absolutely fine with the Nvidia driver that came along when I bought this desktop, and now because I tried to update it, it's causing awful lag that ruins the game experience. I recently removed the majority of the CC I had as well as store content, and the lag still happens, even after I have rolled back the driver to the one before I updated. I have a copy of the Sims folder from my documents saved, in case I need to uninstall and reinstall, but I don't even know where to begin to check for where the issue is coming from.  :'(

01.) Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.4GHz 3.41 GHz
02.) Windows 10
03.) Mods (Yes 17) and CC (77, most from the Store), just 'no autonomous...' mods and I have never had any issues with them before the driver update. I don't think it's the mods
04.) Error message/code given? (No error message...just lagging every few seconds during gameplay.)
05.) LN, UL and High end Loft
06.) I haven't uninstalled the game yet because I still feel like it's the driver issue, not the game's fault itself, but I don't know at this point anymore.
07.) After installing the update for the driver to the new version 372.9 for windows 10 64 bit, I reopened the game and that's when I noticed the settings changed and the minor lagging started (now it's worse lagging)
08.) Current version is 1.69.43.02417

Try this:

1. Go to the computer manufacturer's website and download the graphics driver from there.

2. Completely uninstall the current graphics driver.

3. Restart the computer.

4. Run the graphics driver you've downloaded from step 1. Select custom installation.

5. On the screen that you can select the driver components check the box below that labeled perform clean installation.

6. Once it's done installing, restart the computer again. Try running Sims 3 with a new Sims 3 folder to see how it works. If everything runs well, copy your old folder back in.

How to rename and backup old Sims 3 folder:

Rename the Sims 3 folder something like Sims3Old. Move it to a backup media of choice. Get into game to create a new Sims 3 folder.

It is normal for the game settings to reset after a graphics driver update. I've made note of them and just reset them each time. However, there is away to reset it. It's a little complicated at first, but after you do it a time or two it becomes easier. I'll post those notes in a bit.

Thank you so much for replying so fast!

Um, I'm a bit confused by your first direction:

"1. Go to the computer manufacturer's website and download the graphics driver from there."

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but do you mean the Nvidia drivers site or the actual integrated graphics driver that comes with windows computers? I don't know where/how to check if my computer has its own integrated graphic card or not... Is there a way to check?

What I'm talking about is what kind of computer do you have - Dell, HP, Acer, etc.

Go to it's support site and look up your computer's information there should be a list of drivers available.

Okay, it detected my device and I went to the list of all possible drivers it has and I saw this:

Which one? Is it really okay to download and use the intel hd graphics driver as the dedicated one? Or do you mean the nvidia graphics card driver? (I'm really sorry I'm asking these dumb questions. I'm no computer expert and I just want to apologize beforehand that you might have to be specific when it comes to things like this! I'm really grateful that you're spending your time to help me with this issue!)

Download the GT730 drivers. As you want to use this graphics card instead of the graphics chip (HD Intel graphics)

Okay, it's downloading.

I'm not sure if part of the problem I'm having is because I didn't uninstall the previous driver before installing the newest driver update from Nvidia, and some old folders/settings are conflicting with any new stuff the update brought along.

Now to uninstall the current nvidia driver... should I go to the programs & feature route and uninstall that way, or would you recommend I use one of these programs to remove any potential leftover folders? http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/304706-33-completely-uninstall-graphics-drivers-install-ones and http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2284749/completely-uninstall-amd-nvidia-gpu-drivers.html

Yes, uninstall the drivers through control panel.

I honestly don't know why the drivers messed things up. It could have been a hiccup in the way it installed. But thankfully it's semi-easy to fix it.

Alright, it's finished downloading.

Here goes with the un-installation. (sigh) I'll keep you posted. Thank you for your help so far with this.

Update: Okay, so there's more than one program from nvidia that needs to be uninstalled, and some of them require a system restart so we'll see how that goes.

Update 2: Ok, so I unstalled the drivers from nvidia, but this still remains:

Should I uninstall that too? Or go ahead with installing the old driver I downloaded from the window's driver site?

Sorry for the Bump, but it seems to be working now.

I followed your instructions, and restarted after installing the old driver, then went ahead and moved the sims 3 folder I had in my documents to my desktop, restarted my computer again for good measure, and started the game. It basically opened like the first time I ever opened the game (full screen) and I started to test by playing a two family household, holding my breath the whole time for a lag.

There wasn't any even with the highest settings, so now I'm going to try moving my old sims 3 folder back in. Is there anything I should do while I'm doing that? Like delete the five cache files in the folder or anything?

UPDATE: Ok, now I'm running into problems. I put the old sims 3 folder back in, and the lag problem is still happening. Granted, I do have a few save files and my current active family has 7 sims and they live in a large mansion, so I'm going to try playing a new save file but with 1-2 sims to see if that helps. Will keep you updated.

Update 2: Okay, so I returned to one of my past saved games with just 1 sim in a household, and no lag. Going to try another game file where I had 7 but they were in a much smaller household to rule out if this is a household number issue, even though I never had this issue before.

Update 3: Okay, so the 7 sims in one small house game file works fine with no lag. Now I'm going to try to see if I can go back to the game save file that lags and try to play a smaller household and see if it's specifically my active family that's having issues, or if that particular game file is corrupted.

It shouldn't matter if you uninstall the Nvidia PhysX System Software. So you can uninstall it if you want.

I think I may have it figured out now.

So continuing from my last update, I went back to that game file with the 7 sim household in a large mansion and went to edit town to play a smaller, 4 sim household family to see if it's specifically my active household or the game file that's having issues and causing lag. And in the smaller household, the lag still appears. Now I'm going to try playing a one sim household to see further narrow it down.

Update: It seems even a one-sim household in this particular game file has lag. I'm going to go save the seven sim household that their mansion and put them in the library, both with and without the mansion. Next, I'm going to start a new game file and see if I can they lag in the new file. Maybe this one is just corrupted?

You will have lag and freezing with a large family in a large house. Specially after a generation or two.

However, there are a few things that can help with the lag and freezing, but won't fully prevent it from happening, specially if your playing a saved game that has a family with lots of generations.

Yeah, but see, the strange thing is, this whole lagging business started all of a sudden. It wasn't really gradual at all. And this family is only 1 generation. Plus, I've manually built a mansion on a 64x64 lot before, and put the same sims in that mansion, and they were fine, no lag. That was in another game file (I just tested that one too, all fine, no lag). The only difference is that in this particular one, I used a prebuilt mansion from a reputable cc maker, and even then it was fine until I updated the graphics driver.

I'm not sure what to say, I have read where players have sudden lag from time to time. The only thing I can really suggest is to look over the lag and freezing post to see if there's anything that can help.
