The Sims 4: Hiking

Exploring Mt. Komorebi in Snowy Escape

by Playalot

Hiking in The Sims 4 Snowy Escape
Hiking is a new activity in The Sims 4 Snowy Escape

Outdoor Retreat first brought hiking to The Sims 4, but Snowy Escape has added a little bit more to this function. There are various hiking options, all available on the boards near the entrance to hiking trails in Mt. Komorebi. Each hiking option, such as hike to mountain shrine and hike around, can be carried out alone or with other sims. Depending where your Sim is in the neighborhood some options may not always be available.

Once your Sim has completed their hike of choice you can click on the location boards or on your Sim for options for returning to their home lot.

Encounters

Hiking in The Sims 4 Snowy Escape
Sims can be attacked by bugs while hiking

Occasionally your Sim will have small encounters as they hike around. Your Sim will display surprise or perhaps shock indicating they have noticed something or have been attacked by something. Encounters result in a moodlet, or can boost a moodlet your Sim already received from a previous encounter.

While my Sim was pleasantly surprised by Fireflies in the bamboo forest at dusk while going for a hike, not all encounters are enjoyable. The less desirable bug and critter encounters can be repelled, and their unpleasant effects can be alleviated by lotions or sprays from the Bits'n'Bobs vending machine. If your Sim is fortunate enough to have some high-level skills such as Fitness or Logic, then these too will help protect your Sim during these encounters (much like Jungle Adventures bug attacks).

Spirits

Spirit encounters are a bit different. The Spirits can be collected or wished upon. A wish can grant a State of Tranquility Moodlet and a Simmi Capsule. My Sim received a rare. Other times the Spirits may grant your Sim a small amount of Simoleons. Collecting the Spirits is not always successful and tends to make them angry.

Hiking around will play out in a few ways. Your Sim may enjoy themselves, taking selfies as they happily stroll around the Bamboo Forest or climb the stone steps to the Cave Shrine to shout and listen for the echo. Or they may be unhappy with uncomfortable encounters and wish they had stayed at home instead of wasting their time with a terrible hike. Your Sim can write a wish on an Ema Board at the Shrine or simply enjoy their peaceful encounters with nature.

Meditative Hike

Hiking in The Sims 4 Snowy Escape
Snowy Escape can definitely be lovely.

Meditative Hikes seem like the other types of hikes until you get a special moodlet. While on a Meditative Hike any negative emotions will have a faster cool down. On my Sim's third Meditative Hike, he got a Fine +4 for 4hrs moodlet: "Emotionally Mindful" (From Being Emotionally Mindful).

This is the beginning of Surge Emotions. The Fine moodlet your Sim gets will unlock the "Mindful Walk" ability when you click on your Sim. After a few more hours Walking Mindfully and a Meditative Walk later the Fine moodlet became strength +10: Controlled Emotions (From Being Emotionally Mindful) A state of complete mindfulness, ready to burst forth in any emotion one puts their mind to.

When this happens, your Sim can use 'Surge Emotion' by clicking on them. You can select literally any type of mood including Fury, Ecstatic, Depressed, Confusion, Centered, Can't Focus, Bold, Apathy, Time for Fun, Shameful, Ready for Action, Passion, On Edge, and Ingenuity. Each triggers a related emotion.

Surge emotions lasts 12 hours with a +4 in the chosen mood.

The Surge Emotion ability can be used one time, then your Sim must do Meditative Hikes or other slow paced activities such as cloud gazing and painting.
